Centronuclear Myopathy in Labrador Retrievers
Formerly called
Labrador Muscular Myopathy
Centronuclear Myopathy in Labrador Retrievers, formally called Labrador Muscular Myopathy, is a disabling disease that has been described for 30 years. Labradors that have won Nationals and have been Finalists have been carriers of the recessive gene that causes the disease. These well known carriers, as well as many other carriers, are found in many of today’s field trial, hunt test, and conformation pedigrees. The famous did not start the problem, but by frequent breeding, they did accelerated the increased appearance of the disease in Labrador pedigrees.
The disease was first seen in the United States in the 1970’s. At that time owners, breeders, and veterinarians often did not know what it was. Many researchers have attempted to find a test to identify the cause. In 2004, the Alfort School of Veterinary Medicine research team in France, headed by Drs’ Laurent Tiret and Stéphane Blot, identified the mutated gene and developed a simple and reliable DNA test.
The DNA test is now available from Alfort School of Veterinary Medicine.
