Training Tip #32
Pre-requisites for Collar Conditioning
From: Total E-Collar Conditioning Manual.
Collar Conditioning is basically the process of introducing and accustoming your dog to e-collar corrections.
The e-collar will be effective only when it's a part of an overall program that emphasizes teaching skills, prior to e-collar use, in a positive environment. The e-collar is not used to teach skills but to strengthen and increase the response for behaviors already learned.
It is customary for dogs to have completed formal basic obedience, force fetching, and even some casting drills prior to e-collar conditioning. The
training flow chart on this site shows where e-collar conditioning fits into the overall training program.
For timing in use of praise and corrections prior to introduction of the e-collar as well as with the e-collar, a step-by-step method of conditioning, and introduction to indirect pressure, see the
Total E-Collar Conditioning tape and manual.
